Drilling fluid companies range from SLB, Halliburton and Baker Hughes, none of which reports drilling-fluid revenue separately in its 2025 Form 10-K, to the miners, grinders and polymer makers of the materials. The three groups report fluids inside business units with 2025 revenue of USD 3.6 to 11.9 billion that also hold other products.
A buyer compares scope of supply, grade evidence, documents and delivery terms, and the first question is which kind of company fits the work. The drilling fluid circulated in the borehole is the product that every company on this page supplies, runs or makes the materials for.
The sections below define a drilling fluid company, sort supply into four models, list eleven companies alphabetically with the dated ownership changes since 1998, and set out the comparison points, the documents to request and the packaging and delivery terms of a quote. Companies appear in alphabetical order and are never ranked.
Standards and regulations are checked against their issuing bodies, product values against the named data sheet and figures against the dated source named in the sentence; see our methodology and fact-checking.
What Is a Drilling Fluid Company?#
A drilling fluid company designs, supplies or runs the fluid circulated in a borehole, or produces the minerals, polymers and base fluids it is made of.
A full-service mud company supplies the fluid program, the products, wellsite mud engineers and laboratories, and handles the interface with solids control and drilling waste.
A product supplier sells drilling fluid materials with a certificate of analysis and no wellsite engineering. The materials fall into the classes of drilling fluid additives, for example weighting agents such as barite, viscosifiers such as bentonite and xanthan gum, and fluid-loss additives such as polyanionic cellulose.
Which Kinds of Companies Supply Drilling Fluids?#
Drilling fluids reach a well through four supply models: full-service fluid companies, material producers, distributor and dealer networks, and separate laboratory and monitoring services.
Full-service fluid companies carry the whole fluid program with products and engineers on site. Material producers mine, grind or synthesize the minerals, polymers and base fluids and sell them with a certificate of analysis. Distributor and dealer networks sell branded single-sack lines for HDD, water-well, mineral-exploration, geothermal and foundation drilling. Laboratory and monitoring services test and track the fluid and are bought separately from the products.
The table sets the four models against what each supplies, a filed example and the materials involved.
| Model | What it supplies | Filed example (market fact) | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-service fluid company | Fluid program, products, wellsite mud engineers, laboratories, solids-control interface, drilling waste | Baroid (Halliburton), SLB drilling fluids, Baker Hughes drilling fluids, AES Drilling Fluids (CES Energy Solutions), Newpark Fluids Systems | All additive classes |
| Material producer | Minerals, polymers and base fluids with a certificate of analysis, no wellsite engineering | Bentonite miners, barite grinders, polymer and olefin makers | Barite, bentonite, polyanionic cellulose |
| Distributor and dealer network | Branded single-sack lines for HDD, water well, mineral exploration, geothermal and foundations | Baroid IDP with Cebo International (Europe); Imdex AMC | Packaged products |
| Laboratory and monitoring service | Testing and real-time monitoring bought separately | CES ClearViewer probes and CES laboratories | Test and monitoring services, no materials |
The models overlap, because service companies also own grinding plants: CES Energy Solutions owns the Superior Weighting barite grinding plants at the Port of Corpus Christi and Pecos, Texas, and Baker Hughes lists grinding plants among its principal properties (CES 2024 Annual Information Form; Baker Hughes 2025 Form 10-K).
Major Drilling Fluid Companies and Producers, Listed Alphabetically#
Eleven companies with a drilling-fluid line in a public filing, deal release or company record are listed below in alphabetical order, and the order is not a ranking.
Each row gives the drilling-fluid lines found in the record and, where a filing exists, where fluids sit in the company's reporting. The revenue shown is that of the whole reporting unit named, not drilling-fluid revenue, and dates are completion dates.

The CES Energy Solutions 2024 Annual Information Form states that three large integrated oilfield service companies control a broad majority of the world drilling and completion fluids market, and it lists four oil-based mud plants in Texas and three in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. These plants blend oil-based drilling fluid, a system whose continuous phase is a base oil.
Ownership changes, 1998 to 2024#
The SLB merger with Smith International closed on 2010-08-27 and ended the 60 % Smith and 40 % Schlumberger ownership of M-I SWACO (Houston Chronicle, 2010-02-20).
SCF Partners completed its purchase of the Fluids Systems drilling-fluid business on 2024-09-13 at a base price of USD 127.5 M, and the seller was renamed NPK International Inc. in December 2024 and keeps the matting business, not drilling fluids. SECURE Energy sold its Integrated Fluids Solutions business in Western Canada on 2023-03-15.
The table lists eight dated ownership events in ascending order.
| Date | Event (market fact) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Halliburton records charges for the acquisition of Dresser Industries; Baroid is reported inside Halliburton | Halliburton 2001 Form 10-K |

Suppliers for HDD, water wells and mineral exploration#
Branded single-sack product lines for HDD, water-well and mineral-exploration drilling reach drillers through distributor and dealer networks.
Baroid IDP, a Halliburton product service line for water-well, mineral-exploration, HDD, construction and geothermal heat-loop drilling, uses Cebo International as its European master distributor, and Imdex sells AMC fluids for mineral drilling. The Wyoming Mining Association lists five bentonite producers among its members, and three of them appear in the table above.
Trenchless Technology (2020-08-11) reports that HDD work calls for a drilling fluid engineer on site, a scope that matters to buyers of HDD drilling fluids.
How to Compare Drilling Fluid Suppliers#
Drilling fluid suppliers are compared on scope of supply, grade evidence, documents, traceability and delivery terms, not on a list position.
The first question is what each quote includes. Scope runs from products only to products plus a wellsite engineer on single-shift or 24-hour cover, laboratory support, a solids-control interface, waste management and real-time monitoring.
The table lists eight comparison points, what to ask about each and why it matters.
| Point | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scope of supply | Products only, or products plus wellsite engineer, laboratory, solids-control interface, waste management and monitoring | The quote covers different work at each level |
| Wellsite cover | Single engineer or 24-hour cover | Cover sets how often the fluid is tested and treated |
| Materials range | API Spec 13A materials (barite, bentonite, polyanionic cellulose, xanthan gum) or purchaser-specification materials | Materials outside API Spec 13A have no API grade to quote against |
| Supply chain | Own mine or grinding plant, or resale through distributors | Ownership of the plant decides who holds the lot records |
| Origin and lot traceability | Facility and country of origin on the marking | Each lot is traceable only through its marking |
| Documents | The documents of the next section | Each type of work needs its own certificate |
| Packaging form | Bulk pneumatic, bulk bag, paper sack or cardboard box | The form fixes handling at the site |
| Delivery term | Incoterms 2020 rule and a named place | The rule fixes where cost and risk pass |
The supply chain differs between a company with its own mine or grinding plant and one that resells through distributors, as the CES Energy Solutions plants and the dealer networks above show. For US barite, net import reliance exceeds 75 % of apparent consumption (USGS MCS 2026), so origin and lot traceability matter in a quote.
Product supply or a full mud service?#
A product-only purchase suits a crew that runs its own mud tests, and a full mud service suits a well whose program, testing and treatment the supplier must carry.
The mud engineer is the person who tests the mud at the rig and prescribes the treatments. Buyers scope mud engineering services by wellsite cover, laboratory support and the solids-control interface listed in the table above.
Monitoring and laboratory services can be bought separately from the products, as with the CES ClearViewer probes and CES laboratories.

Documents to Request from a Drilling Fluid Supplier#
Every drilling fluid material ships with a certificate of analysis per lot and a safety data sheet, and offshore, potable-water and API-graded work adds its own certificates.
A certificate of analysis (CoA) states the lot result against the grade, and API Spec 13A judges conformance on a composite sample representing no more than one day's production (18th edition (2010) text). A safety data sheet is written in the language of the country of use (ECHA).
The table lists the eight documents to request, what each shows, its rule and when it applies.
| Document | What it shows | Rule or source | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate of analysis | Lot result against the grade | API Spec 13A, composite sample of at most one day's production (18th edition (2010) text) | Every lot |
| Safety data sheet | Hazards and handling | Country of use, in its language | Every material |
| API Monogram status | Licensee under API Spec Q1 | API directory of licensees | API Spec 13A materials where the contract asks |
| Purchaser specification or data sheet with test methods | Properties of materials without an API section | Contract | PHPA, lignosulfonate, gilsonite, organoclay, calcium carbonate, formates, guar, HEC |
| Stock barite certificate | Hg 1 mg/kg and Cd 3 mg/kg, dry weight, maximum | 40 CFR 435 Subpart A; offshore discharge rules | US offshore discharge |
| HOCNF registration | Product notified for the UK and Netherlands | OCNS (Cefas), new OSPAR form from 2025-12-01 | UK and Dutch offshore |
| PLONOR status | Substance on the OSPAR list | OSPAR Agreement 2013-06, Update 2026 | North-East Atlantic |
| NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 status | Potable-water acceptance | NSF/ANSI/CAN 60 | Water-well products where required |
API Spec 13A covers 13 materials only, among them barite, hematite, bentonite, attapulgite, sepiolite, CMC, starch, polyanionic cellulose and drilling-grade xanthan gum, and ISO 13500:2008 with Corrigendum 1:2009 and Amendment 1:2010 is the ISO counterpart. A grade outside those 13 materials has no API Spec 13A requirement to certify. The stock barite limits apply to stock barite in water-based fluid discharged offshore under 40 CFR 435.13, and the certificate shows that the lot meets them.
The API Monogram is voluntary licensing under an API Spec Q1 quality system, the mark appears only on new conforming product from a licensed facility, and the API directory confirms licensee status. Addendum 2 (2022) blanked Annex A of API Spec 13A and moved the Monogram requirements to API Spec Q1 Annex A, so the quality-system evidence sits in Q1 rather than in 13A. Materials outside API Spec 13A need a purchaser specification or data sheet values with named test methods. OCNS covers offshore chemicals for the UK and the Netherlands, and each product is notified through the Harmonised Offshore Chemical Notification Format (HOCNF), which has a new OSPAR form from 2025-12-01 (Cefas).
Packaging, Origin and Delivery Terms#
API Spec 13A Addendum 2 (2022) names four forms of supply, bulk pneumatic, bulk bags, multi-wall paper sacks and cardboard boxes, and requires each lot to be traceable to its facility and country of origin.
Each package is marked with the trade name or grade, the net mass and a lot number, and bulk loads are marked on the bill of lading or delivery ticket. Quantity is stated in metric tons or short tons, where 1 short ton equals 0.90718474 t.
Incoterms 2020 (11 rules, in force 2020-01-01, the most recent version per the ICC, checked 2026-10-26) match the rule to the cargo: FCA, CPT or CIP for containers, FOB or CFR for bulk loaded on board, and EXW, if at all, only for domestic sales. US entry of ground barite (HTS 2511.10.10.00) and bentonite (2508.10.00.00) carries a general duty of Free (USITC HTS, queried 2026-10-26), and chapter 99 duties may apply by country of origin. The packaging form, the Incoterms rule and the named place are written into every packaging and Incoterms in a quote so that two suppliers quote the same delivery.
The USGS put the average unit value of ground barite at USD 210 per t and of bentonite at USD 110 per t, ex-works, in 2025 (estimated), dated public-record values, not quotes for any delivery.

How Large Are Drilling Fluid Companies?#
The size of a drilling fluid company is hard to read from filings, because SLB, Halliburton and Baker Hughes report fluids inside business units with 2025 revenue of USD 3.6 to 11.9 billion that also hold other products.
Named analyst estimates of the 2025 drilling fluids market run from USD 9.1 billion (Grand View Research) to USD 14.79 billion (Stellar Market Research), each an estimate, and the drilling fluids market size estimates differ by publisher, scope and year. Completion and production chemistry is a separate field, even where one company sells both.
Why no company is ranked here#
No public source ranks drilling fluid companies on a common basis: the integrated groups disclose no fluid revenue, and published market shares are company or analyst estimates. The list order is alphabetical and no company pays to be listed. Pay and hiring are not covered here.
